Santa Ana Wind Season and Your Awning: What to Button Down Before It Tears

Published February 10, 2026 by OCRV Center

The single best thing you can do before a Santa Ana event is keep the awning rolled in and latched. A strong gust catching an extended awning is how most South County owners lose the fabric, bend the arms, and tear the mounting rail off the wall, often all in one afternoon.

Why are awnings so vulnerable to Santa Ana winds?

An extended awning is a big, flat sail bolted to the side of the coach. Santa Ana gusts come fast and hard down the canyons, and they can lift and flip an awning before you get outside to roll it in.

The damage rarely stops at the fabric. The force travels into the arms and the rail, which is where the expensive repairs live.

What should you do before a wind event?

  • Roll the awning fully in and confirm the latch or lock engages
  • Do not leave it out overnight when wind is in the forecast
  • Check that the arms are seated and the travel lock is set
  • Clear anything stored on top of a slide topper that could catch air

What if the wind already got it?

Look past the torn fabric. Check the arms for bends, the rail where it bolts to the wall, and the wall itself for pulled fasteners or cracked skin around the mount.

Why does the mounting point matter most?

A ripped fabric is a straightforward replacement. A rail that tore away can damage the sidewall and open a path for water, which turns a simple awning job into body and seal work.
