Before the First Trip After Your RV Sat: The Roof and Body Walk-Through We Run

Published November 4, 2025 by OCRV Center

Before you take an RV out after it has sat for months, do a real walk-through of the roof, the seals, the slides, and the systems. Sitting still is when problems hide. Sealant dries, small leaks spread, seals take a set, and an idle generator gums up, and all of it is cheaper to catch in the driveway than on the road.

Why does sitting cause problems?

A parked RV is not resting. It is weathering. Sun keeps drying the roof sealant, gaskets compress and stiffen, tanks and lines can seep, and fuel and oil sit in a generator that never runs.

What is on the walk-through?

  • Roof seams and fixtures, checked for cracked or lifting sealant
  • Slide seals and toppers for set, tears, or grabbing
  • Body panels and windows for new stains that signal a leak
  • Awning fabric and arms for sun damage and proper latching
  • The generator and systems, exercised to confirm they still run right

Why start with the roof?

The roof is where most storage-season leaks begin and the place owners never inspect. A seam that dried out while the rig sat is the first thing worth your ladder time.

What about the generator and systems?

An onboard generator does not like sitting unused. Old fuel and an idle carburetor cause hard starts, so it is better to find that at home than at a campsite. The same goes for slides and seals that stiffened in place.

When should the walk-through become a shop visit?

If you find soft roof decking, a slide that binds, several failing seams, or a leak stain inside, that is beyond driveway maintenance. Those are the finds worth bringing in before a trip, not after.

The first trip after storage is when hidden problems surface. OCRV Center checks roofs, seals, slides, and body at our Yorba Linda facility, and Mission Viejo owners drive up before the season starts so a stiff seal or a soft roof does not end a trip early.
