The Soft Spot Under Your Fifth Wheel Nose: Delamination We See on Mission Viejo Trailers

If the fiberglass on your fifth wheel nose feels soft, or you see a wave or bubble in bright side light, that is delamination. Water has broken the bond between the outer skin and the substrate behind it, and it does not stop on its own. The fix is to dry the area and rebond it, or to replace the panel where the separation has gone too far.

What is delamination, really?

An RV wall is a sandwich: a fiberglass skin, an adhesive layer, and a lightweight core. Delamination is that sandwich coming apart, usually because moisture got between the layers and destroyed the bond.

Why does the front cap go first on a fifth wheel?

The nose takes wind pressure, road spray, and every drop that runs down from the roof front seam. It also flexes on the highway, and flex plus trapped water is what pries the skin loose.

How do you spot it early?

• Press the skin: soft or oil-canning areas signal a lost bond
• Look across the panel in low sun for waves or ripples
• Watch for bubbles or a raised outline near seams and windows
• Note any staining or musty smell inside near that wall

Can a soft spot be repaired without a whole new cap?

Sometimes. If the area is caught early and the core is still sound, we can dry it, inject and rebond the layers, and refinish. If the core is wet and crumbling, that section has to come out.

The size and the moisture decide it, which is why an early look saves the bigger repair.

What happens if it is ignored?

It spreads. The soft patch grows, the skin bulges, and what could have been a localized rebond turns into a full cap replacement plus interior wall work.
